States of Matter: Matter exists in three main states – solid, liquid, and gas. The behavior of particles in each state differs:

  • Solids: Tightly packed particles that vibrate in fixed positions.
  • Liquids: Particles that are close together but can move/slide past each other.
  • Gases: Particles move freely and rapidly in all directions.
