Electromagnets are created by running an electric current through a wire wound around a magnetic material (e.g., iron). The strength of the magnet can be increased by:

  • Increasing the number of coils of wire
  • Increasing the current in the wire

In this experiment, you can make your own electromagnet by adjusting the number of coils and current strength. You can also test whether it can pick up iron nails.
